Advance now operates 5,297 company-operated stores, 105 Worldpac branches, and services approximately 1,400 independently owned Carquest branded stores in 49 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Canada. Advance employs over 71,000 Team Members.

In January, announced the completion of acquisition of General Parts International, Inc. (GPII), a leading privately held distributor and supplier of original equipment and aftermarket replacement products for commercial markets operating under the CARQUEST and WORLDPAC brands, in an all-cash transaction with an enterprise value of $2.04 billion.

Celebrated 20 year partnership with JDRF and $35 million dollars raised for diabetes research.

Advance Auto Parts celebrates its 75th year in business.

2005
In January, Forbes Magazine rates Advance Auto Parts as the “Best Managed Retail Company in America.” On May 19th, Larry Castellani transitions from Chief Executive Officer to Chairman of the Board. Under Larry’s leadership, Advance grew from 1,630 stores to 2,678 stores. Mike Coppola is named President and CEO as Larry transitions.

In August, Advance Auto Parts buys Western Auto Supply Company/Parts America, which doubles the company’s size almost overnight.

Garnett Smith becomes President and Chief Executive Officer of Advance Auto Parts. Nick Taubman remains Chairman.

Arthur Taubman passes away on March 15, leaving a legacy in a company with 5,000 employees and stores in eight states.

The 185,000-square-foot distribution center in Roanoke opens.

Advance Auto Parts celebrates the opening of its 100th store in Vinton, Virginia.

Advance Auto changes its name to “Advance Auto Parts.” The change signals the company’s dedication to automotive hard parts.

The PDQ (Parts Delivered Quickly) Program rolls out, providing customers access to more than 25,000 automotive parts and accessories.

Arthur Taubman steps down as President but remains Chairman of the company. Nick Taubman assumes the role of President. There are 54 Advance stores in four states.

Advance Stores Company changes its name to “Advance Auto.”

Advance builds its first freestanding stores in Roanoke on 9th Street.

Nick Taubman announces the plan to transition from a variety store into a specialty auto parts chain.

World War II begins. Like other retailers, Advance Stores has to reinvent itself in order to stay afloat.

Arthur Taubman purchases Advance Stores and begins his successful drive to build a multi-state chain of auto and home supply stores.
